Grevillea 'Poorinda Illumina'

ORIGIN: Grevillea 'Poorinda Illumina' is presumed to be a hybrid between G. lavandulacea and G lanigera. Cultivar first received by the Authority in October 1963. The applicant was Mr L Hodge 'Poorinda', Mt Lookout Road, Bairnsdale, Victoria 3875.

DESCRIPTION: G. 'Poorinda Illumina' grows to a dense shrub about 1m tall and 1.5m across. Its distinguishing feature is its arched, cascading branches. The foliage is grey-green which contrasts well with the dark pink/red flowers. The leaves are about 1.8cm long and 2mm wide with pungent tips and revolute edges. The flowers are profuse, in terminal clusters on short branchlets. The perianth is deep pink grading to pale cream on the limb with matching pink styles.

DIAGNOSIS: This cultivar bears a great resemblance to G. lavandulacea which has resulted in confusion over its identity. It differs in that G. 'Poorinda Illumina' has arching branches and the individual flowers are about 8mm long as compared with those of G. lavandulacea which are about 1cm long.

CULTIVATION NOTES: This cultivar is both frost and drought hardy. It flowers most prolifically from July - August. G. 'Poorinda Illumina' has been in cultivation since 1960.
