Grove, Charles Henry (Carl)   (1850 - 1938)

Born in 1850; died on 17 April 1938 at Box Hill at the age of 88.

Prior to coming to the Snowy River district, Carl worked as overseer on Buchan Station.

In 1880, he selected land at Newmerella after first coming here in 1874 with early selector James A. Robertson.

He married Annie Robertson in 1876.

Carl was a farmer, hop and seed grower and nurseryman.

He was an elected Councillor of the newly formed Tambo Shire in 1882, and then in 1892 to the Orbost Shire where he served for many years filling various public roles.

In 1910 he moved with his family to farm at a property called 'Kelvin Grove', "on Barker's Creek", near Nawango, Queensland. He retired in 1923 and his son took over the farm.

In retirement he moved to Box Hill, Victoria, where on August 24, 1936, he celebrated his diamond wedding with Annie.

He died on 17 April 1938 at Box Hill and was buried in the Anglican plot of the Orbost Cemetry.

As well as herbarium collections he appears to have produced wood-block samples of Australian timbers which were donated to the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in Sydney (now the Powerhouse Museum) and the Victorian School of Forestry Herbarium.

Melaleuca groveana Cheel & C.T.White (1924) is named in his honour as he was the collector of the original material.

NOTE: He seems to have erroneously picked up the title of 'Reverend', presumably in the Anglican church. This appears in Willis et al 'Collectors & Illustrators' (1986) and to have permeated in later literature. He had been a pillar of the church, and started the first Sunday School in Orbost in 1884, but there seems to be no record of him being ordained, nor is "Rev." mentioned in the contemporary press.
