Born in Venice (Italy) on 12 June 1788. Died in Stuttgart (Germany) on 24 February 1872
Studied law and sciences in Tübingen. Was a member of the German Academy
of Scientists "Leopodina" since 1832.
Undertook several journeys
to Italy. Published several scientific publications on botanical themes e.g.
"Die Tange. In: Die preussische Expedition nach Ost-Asien. Botanischer
Theil. (Berlin 1866)"
As a botanist, he collected specimens from southern Germany, Austria and northern Italy. In 1832, with Gustav Schübler, he conducted botanical investigations in southeastern Württemberg. His European collections subsequently became part of the "Naturaliencabinet" in Stuttgart. He is also known for his studies of freshwater and marine algae, especially species native to eastern Asia.
There is no record of him coming to the south-east Asian or Australasian region.
