Born on 27 August 1940 at Lane Cove, Sydney, NSW;
Tony started as a forestry student then
worked in a wood structure laboratory, then switched
to botany and was the first Horticultural Botanist
at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney.
There, among other tasks he catalogued the garden's collections, identified plants
for the public, and collected plants in the wild.
He has co-authored books on palms and
rainforest gardens as well as contributing
material to various other publications, including the
Australian Encyclopedia and The Ultimate Book
of Trees & Shrubs.
His special interest is the
classification and nomenclature of ornamental
plants, but he has long experience in their garden
uses as well.
He is also a photographer, managing
his own library of botanical transparencies of
which more than 2,000 have been published in
books.
Among his other activities are environmental consulting and the compilation of a database of early plant introductions to Australia.
Tony's leisure time is occupied by literature,
bushwalking and fishing for trout in mountain
streams.
