She was a daughter of James Barnard, Collector of
Customs, Hobart.
She was an amateur naturalist whose
photographs had illustrated 'Some Wild Flowers of
Tasmania', written by dentist/botanist Leonard Rodway in 1910. [Bauera rubioides illust. right]
Leonard had been appointed Honorary Government Botanist for Tasmania in 1896, and held the position until 1932.
In 1928 he was appointed Honorary Curator of the Tasmanian Museum Herbarium, until his resignation in 1932.
Leonard Rodway had married his first wife, Louisa Susan Phillips, a dentist's daughter, in Brisbane on 19 May 1879.
She died in 1922.
A year later, on 17 May 1923 at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Hobart, Leonard Rodway married Olive Barnard.
The Tasmanian Herbarium, established by Leonard Rodway in 1928, was housed at the Botanical Gardens until 1932 when Leonard resigned and his second wife, now Olive Rodway, was appointed Keeper.
Leonard died in 1936.
The collections were moved back to the Museum, and important additions made in succeeding years were Leonard's personal herbarium, consisting of flowering plants, fungi, mosses and liverworts, and R.L.G. Brett's collection of eucalypts.
Olive Rodway resigned in 1941 and the Herbarium was again moved to the Botanical Gardens.
It was housed there in a wooden hut, under the care of a part-time Keeper, Dr Winifred Curtis.
