Young, Jess (or Jesse) (1852 - 1909)
Born in England in May 1852; died on 8 October 1909 in Perth, WA.
He was the son of Richard Young. M.P.D.L., at one time senior Sheriff of London and Middlesex.
He was educated at St. Andrew's and at Christ College, Cambridge, England.
In 1869 he went to India with letters of introduction to the Governor General from the Speaker of the House of Commons, with a view of joining the Royal Bengal Marine. He was on Lord Mayo's escort when that nobleman was stabbed in the Andaman Islands.
Jess Young arrived in South Australia in 1874.
He was, in his own
words, an "observer and naturalist" and
"astronomer" in the party on the explorer Ernest
Giles's fourth expedition.
Young accompanied Giles on the
expedition in 1875 across western Australia, which left Beltana, S.A., on 6 May
and arrived in Perth, WA., on 13 November.
Giles in his notable book Australia Twice Traversed; The
Romance of Exploration
(1889) mentions Young several times and on p. 131 refers to 'Mr Jess
Young, a young friend of Sir Thomas Elder, lately arrived from
England'.
Giles assessed his colleagues somewhat unkindly
thus:
"The officers, Mr. Tietkens and Mr. Young, except for
occasional outbursts of temper, and all the other
members of the expedition, acted in every way so as
to give me satisfaction; and when I say that the
personnel of the expedition behaved as well as the
camels, I cannot formulate greater praise".
Notably, Giles did not request Mr. Young to
accompany him on his overland return journey to
South Australia.
Young then travelled in December
1875 via Adelaide to Melbourne, where he handed
over the botanical collections to Ferdinand von
Mueller (700-800 specimens collected, by his own
account, as reported in the Australasian Sketcher, 22
January 1876).
He passed the mineral and fossil
collections to the Department of Mines, and gave press
accounts of the expedition.
In January 1876 he
proceeded by Pacific steamer to San Francisco and
thence to London (Adelaide Evening Journal 1876;
Brisbane Telegraph 1876).
He published an account
of his Australian travels in 1878 as Recent Journey of Exploration across the
Continent of Australia; Its Deserts, Native Races, and Natural
History.
At some time after this he is said to have had the honour of "being presented to Queen Victoria, the Czar of Russia, the King of Italy, the King of the Belgians, the Empress of Germany and other royalties, and received the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society".
However Rix (2025) casts doubt on these claims, pointing out that, "he is not listed among
the recipients of the RGS medals and awards, and it
was in fact Ernest Giles who received the RGS
Patron's Medal in 1880".
Jess Young went to the
United States in 1879 to work in business.
There he held positions in the American 'Sanitas' Company, Edison's Phonograph Company and the Brewer Company.
Resigning his appointments abroad, in 1891, went back to England on family matters, and obtained employment under the Board of Agriculture.
He then joined an expedition to the Arctic and the Siberian coast.
He
returned to Western Australia in 1892 and took
various public service roles in the Gascoyne region
and Kanowna, inclding working as a clerk, mining
registrar, warden of Gascoyne Goldfield, treasury cashier at Kanowna etc.
He married socialiet, Emilie Olea DaSilva in New York on the 2 Jun 1890. However the couple divorced in 1892.
In ill health for much of his later life he died in Perth in on 8 October 1909.
(buried in Karrakatta Cemetery, Nedlands).
He is honoured in the
names Eucalyptus
youngiana F. Muell. (1876) and Eremophila youngii F.Muell (1876).
