Pterostylis hildae Nicholls, Queensland Naturalist 10: 39-40, t. 3 (1937). Type: Queensland. Tamborine Mountain, 9 Sep. 1924, H. Geissman s.n. (holo MEL, found in AD), fide Clements (1989).

Distribution

Occurs in Queensland from the Atherton Tableland to near Wollongong in New South Wales.

Altitude: 200-800 m.

Description

Terrestrial herb forming small colonies. Tubers globular, fleshy. Leaves 2-4, prostrate, forming a basal rosette, petiolate; lamina elliptic, 1.5-8 cm x 0.6-2.5 cm, dark green to yellowish-green, margins entire to crisped, apex acute to apiculate. Inflorescence terminal, single-flowered, 80-200 mm tall. Flower solitary, resupinate, erect to semi-nodding, hooded, 23-27 mm x 10-12 mm, with striate markings, green, white and brown. Dorsal sepal hooded, forming galea with petals; obliquely erect in lower part, upper third horizontal or decurved, apex apiculate. Lateral sepals erect, bases fused to form synsepalum for proximal half; sinus curved, deeply emarginate, with wide sine gap; distal parts divergent, free points tapered, 10-12 mm long, not extending above galea. Petals oblong, falcate, apex apiculate. Labellum unlobed, just protruding when set, widest above the middle, 11-13 mm x 4 mm, curved near apex, green to brown, obtuse. Column 12-14 mm long. Capsules erect, dehiscent.

Ecology

Occurs in wet sclerophyll forests and rainforests growing in shady conditions in humus-rich soil.

Widespread and common.

Flowering period: March-October.
