Leaf placement (plants with multiple leaves and plants fertile)

This character refers to the placement of leaves on the stems or pseudobulbs and their position relative to the inflorescence.  The leaves can be scattered along the stem or grouped either centrally or at the base.


Basal to scape/peduncle: the leaves are usually close to ground level.

Scattered along stem or pseudobulb: the leaves can be arranged opposite or alternate along a stem or pseudobulb.

Apical on stem or pseudobulb: the leaves are held singly or arranged in a group at the apex of the stem or pseudobulb.

Arranged in a central group on stem: the leaves are arranged in a central group well above the ground.
