Australian Tropical Rainforest Orchids

Pseudobulb shape

The shape of a pseudobulb is variable.

Tapered: widest at base, tapered to apex.

Reverse taper: narrow at base, widened to apex.

Conical/pyriform/ovoid/ellipsoid: widest toward the base or middle (cone/pear/egg/ellipse).

Fusiformwidest in the middle and tapered toward the apex and base (spindle-shaped).

Globular: almost spherical.

Obovoid: like an upside down egg - broader above the middle.

Cylindrical: round in cross section and not tapered.

Slender and cane-like: the stems resemble the cane-like growth of some grasses.

Tetragonal cross section shows the stem to have four sides.
